Heritage Arborist is based in North Alabama, but the Gulf Coast has been part of Jeremy VanMaanen's family life for about seven years. The family keeps and maintains a boat on the Alabama Gulf Coast, returns throughout the year, and Jeremy has performed tree work for customers in the area during those stays.
This October brings an extended period of professional availability along the coast — the longest stretch so far, built around arboriculture conference and training commitments in the region.
Jeremy is a fourth-generation arborist and a working production climber. Every assessment is performed personally: no salespeople, no subcontracted crews.

An assessment is not the same thing as a free estimate
A free estimate answers one question: what would it cost this company to do the work they are proposing. That is a legitimate and useful thing, and the tree companies along this coast do good work.
An independent assessment answers a different question: what is actually going on with this tree, what is the realistic likelihood and consequence of failure, and what does the property actually need. Because Heritage Arborist is not bidding to perform removal here, the recommendation is not connected to who gets the job.
That distinction matters most when the recommendation is expensive, when a tree has significant value, or when someone needs to be able to show their reasoning later.

Property / Multi-Tree Assessment

For HOAs, condominium associations, rental and vacation properties, commercial sites, estates, churches and marinas — anywhere multiple trees need to be evaluated and ranked against each other.

“Starting at” means exactly that. Larger portfolios and multi-property assignments are quoted on scope.
Climbing Inspection
Add-on, typically $200–$300+
Some defects cannot be evaluated from the ground. Unions, cavities, upper-canopy cracks and suspected internal decay often need to be inspected in the canopy to be assessed properly.

Jeremy will be on the Gulf Coast for an extended period this October, around the Alabama Urban Forestry Association conference and associated professional training. Appointments can be booked across the available periods from the conference week through October 31.
Conference and training days are blocked and cannot be booked. Everything around them is open, and appointments are routed geographically so the schedule works. Earlier requests are easier to fit sensibly into the route.

Questions
What is a tree risk assessment?
It is a structured evaluation of a tree to determine the likelihood that it fails, the likelihood that it strikes something if it does, and the consequences if that happens. It considers species, structure, defects, decay, site conditions, exposure and what is beneath the tree. The result is a reasoned judgment about risk and what can be done to reduce it — not a guarantee.
Is this different from a free tree estimate?
Yes. A free estimate prices proposed work. An assessment determines what the tree actually needs before anyone prices anything. Because Heritage Arborist is not bidding to remove your tree during these visits, the finding is not tied to who performs the work.
Do you recommend removal on every hazardous-looking tree?
No. A great many trees that look alarming to a homeowner are structurally sound, and a fair number that look fine are not. Mitigation is often pruning, reducing end weight, changing what sits beneath the tree, or monitoring on a defined schedule. Removal is one option among several.
Will you tell me my tree is safe?
No, and be cautious of anyone who does. Trees are living structures in a changing environment and no assessment can eliminate risk or predict weather. What an assessment provides is a professional evaluation of the level of risk and the options for reducing it.
Are you actually based on the Gulf Coast?
No. Heritage Arborist is a North Alabama tree service based in Arab, Alabama. There is no Gulf Coast office, no resident crew and no second location, and Gulf Coast work happens during scheduled visits. What is true is that Jeremy and his family have kept a boat on the Alabama Gulf Coast for about seven years, return through the year, and he has performed tree work for customers in the area during those stays. October is simply a longer stay than usual.
What dates are actually available in October?
Jeremy is on the coast for an extended period around the Alabama Urban Forestry Association conference and associated training. Conference and training days are blocked; the periods around them are bookable through October 31. October 29–31 in particular fall after his scheduled ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification program.
Can you assess a tree before I buy a property?
Yes. Pre-purchase tree assessment is one of the more valuable uses of this service, because mature trees near a structure can represent significant future cost that a general home inspection will not evaluate in any depth.
Can you inspect trees for an HOA or condominium association?
Yes. The Property / Multi-Tree Assessment is built for exactly that, including a written summary appropriate for presenting to a board. Scope and final pricing are confirmed in advance based on the property and the number of trees involved.
I run a tree company. Are you competing with me?
No. You keep the customer and you keep the production work. What is on offer is the part that sits outside production — independent assessment, written documentation, a second opinion when a client asks for one, and climbing inspection or specialised climbing when a tree needs it. Referrals run in both directions.
Can you provide written documentation?
Yes, at the Assessment + Written Report tier and above. The $250 assessment tier includes a short written summary by email but not a formal report — if documentation is the reason you are booking, choose the report tier so expectations match.
Can you climb a tree to inspect defects?
Yes. Jeremy is a working production climber and brings professional climbing equipment. Climbing inspection is recommended where a defect genuinely cannot be evaluated from the ground, and is priced by complexity and access.
What areas are covered?

What should I send before the appointment?
Photographs are the most useful thing: the whole tree from far enough back to see its structure, the base and root collar, and close-ups of anything that concerns you. If a tree company has already given you a recommendation or quote, send that too.
Can you assess storm-damaged trees?
Yes. Storm-damaged trees are a common and appropriate reason for assessment, particularly where limbs have failed or a tree has shifted and the owner needs to know whether what remains is sound.
Do you perform major tree removals on the Gulf Coast?
Not large-scale removals — the production fleet and crew stay in North Alabama. The focus is assessment, consultation, documentation and inspection. Beyond that, specialised climbing, technical pruning and other appropriate tree work can be scheduled where the job genuinely suits one experienced climber; ask when you submit and it will be quoted honestly or declined honestly.
