We are in the midst of winter right now and no matter what part of the country you are in this is the best time for pruning your trees. The reasons why are simple and few. First, the trees have entered their dormant period. This is important because any type of cutting performed will leave a wound the tree tries to heal from. Healing for a tree takes energy.
Winter pruning also gives you a clear view of the tree's structure without leaves in the way, making it easier to identify dead, crossing, or poorly attached branches before spring growth hides them again. In North Alabama the practical window runs from leaf-drop through late February; the exceptions are spring-flowering trees, which are pruned after they bloom, and storm-damaged limbs, which come out whenever they happen.
